Glenn Hauser logs June 18-19, 2017

** CANADA. Sporadic E FM DX opening from NY, PA, OH, IN, see USA for intro: concludes with several Ontarians, June 18, all times UT:

91.9, at 1643, discussion of French politix, interviewing someone in ``Our Ottawa studios``, so CBC Radio 1. Assuming this has got to be Ontario, the two CBC stations are: CBCC-FM way up in Hearst, NW Ontario, and right in our PTA:

[CBEW-FM-1, //CBEW-FM 97.5, 91.9, LEAMINGTON ON, 10.45 kW H&V, 73.6m HAAT, 42-06-46, 82-39-52, ----, Radio 1, CBC RADIO ONE WINDSOR, NEWS/TALK] 1457 km/906 stmi

92.7, at 1646, ad/PSA string including: Canada`s best national network, bell.ca; blood.ca; food basics (as RDS is trying to lock in, but won`t); Canada 150 this summer: start in London and go anywhere; therapy.ca, another London ad with 519 phone, correct AC for there.

[CJBX-FM, 92.7, LONDON ON, 50.0 kW H&V, 121.0 m HAAT H only?, 42-56-40, 81-04-47, C976, Title & Artist on BX93, TODAY'S COUNTRY BX93, Country, BX 93, COUNTRY] 1599 km/993 stmi

I bet Rob Ross is getting plenty of Okies again, while I seldom get Ontaries. I`m away from the analog TV or I might have seen CIII. There are several other 92.7s in ON, including one in Leamington which I just heard on 91.9.

93.5, at 1650, discussion of Canadian politix like a few minutes ago on 91.9, probably also `Sunday Edition` from CBC Radio 1 (which used to be on SW! Sob). See log below at 1658.

95.3, at 1653, a .ca ad, ``HD radio 1 on 95.3``, ad for green trucks air conditioning service with 905 AC; froyofranchising.ca (frozen yogurt); 1655, Plaza Nissan in Upper James, ``Fresh Radio``, rap. Clues lead to Hamilton ON, so:
[CING-FM, 95.3, HAMILTON ON, 100.0 kW H&V, 305.0 m HAAT H only? 43-12-27, 79-46-27, HD, C7E9, SONG BY ARTIST on 953 FreshFM, SONG BY ARTIST on 953 FreshFM, Adult Hits, 95.3 FRESH RADIO, HOT AC] 1714 km/1065 stmi

96.3, at 1656, creditreport.com ad, weak CCI from band music, so a classical station? Certainly not WQXR or KHFM, long banished from this to inferior frequencies! No likely US stations now, but next to Hamilton:

[CFMZ-FM, 96.3, TORONTO ON, 60.0 kW H&V, 284.0 m HAAT H only? 43-38-56, 79-22-54, C260, CFMZ, New Classical 96.3fm, Classical, CLASSICAL FM, 96.3 & 103.1, CLASSICAL] 1766 km/1097 stmi

This might have been helpful:
http://www.classicalfm.ca/what-was-that-piece
but today`s playlist checked 5 hours later does not go back that far, and seems to display time in pm 5 hours ahead since my computer runs on UT. Didn`t think of that?

93.5, at 1658, ``93.5 FM in southwestern Ontario``, The Concert(?) promo, ``NRC official timesignal, at the beginning of the long dash it will be 1 pm EDST``: I hear it all including some almost silent pips, and make a note against my watch to compare ASAP to WWV --- and find CBC/NRC were one second slow! Then CBC News starting with wildfire in Portugal. (OK, Carlos?)

[CBCL-FM, 93.5, LONDON ON, 100.0 kW H only, 267.2 m HAAT, 42-57-20, 81-21-19, CBC RADIO ONE LONDON, NEWS/TALK] 1599 km/993 stmi

Promptly fade out, and so has everything else, down to 87.75, but I keep tuning for another few minutes before quitting, just in time for br/unch. Subsequent 6m map chex indicate Es has died out around here (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 14670-CUSB, June 18 at 1719, CHU audible poorly, but not on 7850. June 19 at 0230, no signal on 7850 but audible on 3330 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [and non]. 9355, June 18 at 1715, very poor signal with music, probably CNR1 jamming against RFA Chinese via Saipan; no comparison to VOK on 9435 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5010, June 19 at 0237, JBA carrier from RHC leapfrog. At first I could not detect it but blanker vs S9 local noise level on the NRD-545 made the difference. Would have expected more and a match on 5055, since both 5025 with Rebelde on! and 5040 RHC were S9+45. The spurs could be suppressed, or if they totally vanish, clue us that the two fundamentals are no longer from same site (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH. 9435, June 18 at 1712, surprisingly VG signal with sweet orchestral music typical of VOK, but especially during a pause after French ID, self-imposed jamming noise also evident. Better than WRMI on 9395 & 9455. As expected, this is on the ubiquitous 28 degree azimuth toward North America, 200 kW from Kujang. Same // 11710 considerably weaker at 1717 now a song (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 7350, June 19 at 0233, S9 military band probably with Kurdish non-national anthem, but dumped off air for a semiminute, by when resuming now in a song. Presumed Denge Kurdistane via FRANCE (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 13839.98, UT Monday June 19 at 0250, RNZI with very interesting discussion about Monarch butterflies, how to raise them from caterpillars, what plants they like to eat and lay up to 1100 eggs on – so only a few of those need to survive to assure this threatened species survives. When they mate, they stick together for 24-36 hours. Trouble is, humans don`t like milkweed and other plants the flutterbys require. Evidently the Monarchs found in NZ migrate to Tahiti in the summer. Refers to http://monarch.org.nz or http://mb.org.nz for more info. But no guest or program ID before cutting to Maori and English RNZI IDs, accurate timesignal and RNZ news, leading with death of Vanuatu President Lonsdale.

So what show was this? Allegedly scheduled for 2-3 PM NZT Mondays is BBC Newsday! But this was certainly a NZ show. Fortunately, searching on Monarch leads right to it:

EXPERT FEATURE: MONARCH BUTTERFLIES
Audio science 2:26 pm today

Did you know the monarch caterpillar will increase in size by 3 thousand times over two weeks as it devours the leaves of a swan plant, before transforming into a chrysalis? The monarch is a very well recognised butterfly, mainly because it is so common people's gardens.

** NORTH AMERICA. 7585, June 19 at 0232, S8 from Station YHWH with just enough modulation to recognize (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1882 monitoring: confirmed Sunday June 18 at 2330 on WBCQ, 9330.0v-CUSB, fair. Disrupted on Area 51 via WBCQ 5129.8: UT Monday June 19, JL runs slightly over but cut off at 0301 for a couple minutes dead air, and some canned WBCQ IDs. Then at 0303 WOR upcut opening, so seems OK now, but 0313 recheck, WBCQ IDs are playing over and over every 14 seconds, more dead air from 0315, music at 0316: Peter Gunn variations. 0330 recheck dead air; 0347 some music but not HRI. Must have had a big problem with the automation and/or feed to the transmitter. Also confirmed UT Monday June 18 at 0330 on WRMI 9955, good. Next:
Mon 2330   WBCQ 9330v-CUSB to WSW
Tue 0030   WRMI 7730 to WNW
Tue 2130   WRMI 9455 to WNW, 15770 to NE
Tue 2330   WBCQ 9330v-CUSB to WSW
Wed 1030   WRMI 5850 to NW, 9455 to WNW
Wed 1315   WRMI 9955 to SSE
Wed 2100   WBCQ 7490v to WSW
Wed 2330   WBCQ 9330v-CUSB to WSW
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9395, UT Monday June 18 at 0220, another secret airing of `AWR Wavescan`, on the WRMI Oldies channel, in progress ending NASB segment, then Latin American DX Report, a new feature, third edition (monthly?), with three topix: RAE relays via WRMI. Only other high power South American station, Brasília out of axion since mid-March, but low-power DRM tests with 300 watts at 344 degrees. Schedule change of R. Chaski, Perú, 5980, to 1100-1630 & 1730-2330. (All of which we already know about.) Produced by Omar Ortiz en Bogotá, translated and spoken with heavy accent by Fernando --- in Santiago de Chile. Took almost 7 minutes until QSL of the Week. In wrapup I check 11580, and find WS also playing there but about a semi-minute ahead of 9395. That`s probably because 9395 likes to run IDs at top of hour rather than just before ToH (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5129.8, UT Monday June 19 at 0236, Area 51 via WBCQ, Johnny Lightning explains why we do not need The Ten Commandments. More at WORLD OF RADIO monitoring (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9475, June 18 at 1710, WTWW-1 is back on with VG signal but suppressed modulation and noisy. Something`s wrong with the transmitter or maybe just the modulation input. 12105 & 9930 are still off.

5830, June 19 at 0241, corresponding night frequency of WTWW-1 has same suptorted modulation problem, plus hum (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9370, June 18 at 1711, WWRBS is off. 3185 was nominal circa 0600 last night. And so is 3185 at 0231 check June 19 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5890, UT Monday June 18 at 0243, hokey old time radio drama, ``The Planet Man``, on Golden Age of Radio, but makes more sense than the primary occupant of WWCR-4, Brother HyStairical. PDF sked still fails to convert CDT to UT correctly, claiming this is on Sundays at 8-10 pm, = (not) 02-04 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. Another sporadic E DX opening into the FM band, midday June 18. I head to the porch, where it`s not so hot today, only in the 80s. ``All logged on my own receivers, with my own ears, in real time``. And only using attached rod antennas, easily manipulable.

These are mostly on the handheld PL-880, with the DX-398 also set on the table, hoping for some RDS ID help, but the signals are fading so much and/or with so much CCI, that I never get any RDS readings during this opening, except when tuning across Okies! Local atmosphere is rather turbulent, producing deep fading on groundwave signals much like Es. Lots of stuff coming in from around Lakes Erie and Ontario.

Bracketed info is from the WTFDA FM database, and in the case of TV from W9WI.com. Distances are approx., city-to-city, not site. All times UT, June 18:

92.7, at 1616, amid CCI mix, ``Happy 92-7`` (hyphen means a pause, no ``point`` spoken). WTFDA DB gets no hits, so Yahoo search converts to Happi. Searching WTFDA on Happi leads only to this:

[WEHP, 92.7, LAWRENCE PARK PA, 6.0 kW H&V, 3.0 [three!] meters HAAT, 42-07-25, 80-07-02, HD, 5FFD, HAPPI RADIO 927, Top 40, HAPPI RADIO 92.7, CONTEMPORARY HIT RADIO] 1663 km/1033 stmi, near Erie

90.7, at 1624, obviously public radio show `From the Top` of up-and-coming young classical performers. Lots of hunting on the show website finally leads to this ``NPR Carriage Report`` which is over a year old:
https://www.fromthetop.org/wp-content/uploads/From-the-Top-Spring-2016.pdf

Of the 12 stations with 15 entries, this is the only one at the right time on the right frequency (and the right PTA):
WGLE-FM OH Lima 90.7 Associate 228 188 Sun 12:00PM 01:00PM [EDT]
The 228 and 188 refer to the Metro area and DMA rankings.
WGTE/WGLE current sked confirms `From the Top` still at noon Sundays.

[WGLE 90.7, LIMA OH, 50.0/46.0 kW H&V, 128.0 m HAAT, 40-39-15, 84-06-36, 65A2, WGLE, NPR News, Jazz, NEWS/TALK] 1291 km/802 stmi

87.75, at 1626, Spanish non-ID by SHVA (super-hype voice actor), as ``Omega? 87.7``; 1627 YL ad as ``abogada de inmigración``, phone 216 861-44-14, http://www.brown-immigration.com (titled: Ohio Immigration Lawyer) and another ID more clearly merely as ``La Mega 87.7``, Tex-Mex music. AC 216 leads to Cleveland OH, so it`s one of many Franken-FMs, TV licensee pretending to be a radio station, and who cares about the video 4.5 MHz below?

[WLFM-LP, 87.7, CLEVELAND OH, 3.0 kW H only, HAAT unknown, 41-22-58, 81-42-07, Spanish, 7242, LA MEGA 87.7, LATINO AND PROUD, SPANISH, CHR]

Spanish is specified for 13 of them! W9WI.com shows WLFM-LP as E:HSN, i.e. English with Home Shopping Network, so video only, or outdated?

On the PL-880 seems slightly clearer at 87.76, so analog TV 6 maybe offset plus. But listed as zero offset, OK. Certainly NOT 87.70!! 1509 km/938 stmi

88.3, at 1630, CCI between sports talk in English, ``division race``, and a bit of Spanish. The only 88.3 SS in NE USA (none in Canada) is:
[WHWN, 88.3, PAINESVILLE OH, 0.7 kW H&V, 44.0 m HAAT, 41-42-17, 81-14-34, Spanish, LA NUEVA MIA, SPANISH] 1552 km/964 stmi beyond Cleveland

88.3, at 1631, local weather info ``Mostly cloudy in Elyria``. There is no Elyria CoL station, but Berea is close, both just SW of Cleveland:
[WBWC, 88.3, BEREA OH, 4.0 kW H&V, 78.0 m HAAT, 41-25-05, 81-54-03, 88.3 THE STING, ADULT ALTERNATIVE]. Or did they say Berea? This name was pronounced ``el-ERIE-uh`` not ``el-EYE-ree-uh``. 1492 km/927 stmi

88.3, at 1633, area code 260 phone number, and mention Fort Wayne. Those correlate, so it`s:
[WLAB, 88.3, FORT WAYNE IN, 7.5 kW H&V, 108.0 m HAAT, 41-06-24, 85-11-46, STAR 88.3, CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN] 1221 km/759 stmi

90.3, at 1636, gospel rock, Es fading vs nearby Okie. At 1642, ``Life changing message for the whole family, WBCL Radio Network``, ergo:
[WBCL, 90.3, FORT WAYNE IN, 26.0 kW H&V, 211.0 m HAAT, 41-06-13, 85-11-46, 578B, WBCL90.3 WBCL Radio Network.wbcl.org, Title & Artist, No Program Type or Undefined, FAMILY FRIENDLY - COMMERCIAL FREE, CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN/RELIGION] 1221 km/759 stmi

92.9, at 1637, station promo, ``929jackfm.com`` over Tulsa`s Bob:
[WBUF, 92.9, BUFFALO NY, 76.0 kW H&V, 195.0 m HAAT, 42-57-13, 78-52-36, HD, 5959, Jack FM, 92-9JACK FM PLAYING WHAT WE WANT, Adult Hits, 92.9 JACK FM, ADULT HITS] 1777 km/1104 stmi

87.75, at 1638, has some Cleveland ads by SHVA in Spanish, still from WLFM-LP above, but seems CCI from a second station also in Spanish, mentioning Lake Worth, implying Florida. At 1640 ``87.7 - algo`` ID in fade at same time as WLFM-LP also does it. L.W. is just south of West Palm Beach, pretty far from the nearest FL ch 6, per W9WI.com:
[Miami FL, WEYS-LP, 3,000 W ERP, + offset, 25-58-15N, 080-12-32W, LIC, S:Almavision R. 1] but possible; only two others are in faraway Key West and Pánama City.

WTFDA: [WEYS-LP, //WEYS-LP CH 6 AUDIO, 87.7, MIAMI FL, 3.0 kW H only, HAAT unknown, 35-58-15, 80-12-32, Spanish, 5158, WEYS87.7, 877 FM, ALMAVISION RADIO COMPROMETIDOS CON LA VERTAD {sic} TEL 305-947-8879, ALMAVISION, SPANISH] Maybe Miami: 2055 km/1277 stmi

88.5, at 1641, 419 area code phone briefly vs House FM in OK. 419 is NW Ohio circa Toledo, so Wauseon, which is W of Toledo halfway to IN:
[WYSA, 88.5, WAUSEON OH, 10.0 kW H&V, 89.0 m HAAT, 41-33-29, 84-11-08, YES FM, CHRISTIAN CHR/ROCK] 1318 km/819 stmi

BTW, it would have been very nice to hear on 88.5, apparently unrelated WYSU Youngstown OH, as if not DXing, I listen to its HD2 online every Sunday at 17-20 UT for `Pipedreams` and `With Heart And Voice`! including most of those today after 1730.

CONTINUED, under CANADA (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
