Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 - 30 August 2015

Solar activity ranged from low to high levels. Low levels were
observed on 25-26 and 29 Aug, moderate (R1-minor) levels on 27-28
and 30 Aug while high (R2-moderate) levels occurred on 24 Aug. The
vast majority of activity was observed from Region 2403 (S15, L=193,
class/area Fkc/1190 on 25 Aug). In total, this region produced a
total of 58 C-class and six M-class flares. Region 2405 (S19, L=089,
class/area Cro/020 on 29 Aug) produced a total of four weak C-class
flares.

The period began at high levels as Region 2403 produced an impulsive
M5/1b flare at 24/0733 UTC. Later on the 24th, the region produced
an M1 flare at 24/1746 UTC. On 27-28 Aug, Region 2403 produced a
total of three M-class flares; an M2/1n at 27/0544 UTC, an M2/1f at
28/1316 UTC and an M2/1n at 28/1903 UTC. The period ended when
Region 2403 produced a long duration M1 flare at 30/0330 UTC. During
the period, no Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were
detected.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at
high levels on 24-25 and 29 Aug and moderate levels on 26-28 and 30
Aug. The peak flux observed during the summary period was 1,840 pfu
at 25/1700 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to major storm levels.
Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 24-25 Aug due to waning
effects from a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH
HSS). Solar wind parameters reflected a nominal wind environment
with speeds decreasing from about 500 km/s to near 350 km/s by late
on 25 Aug. Early on 26 Aug, geomagnetic field conditions increased
to unsettled to minor storm (G1-minor) levels due to transient
effects from the 22 Aug CME. Geomagnetic activity further increased
on 27 Aug to active to major storm (G2-moderate) levels and
persisted at these levels through 28 Aug. During this time frame,
wind speeds were unimpressive averaging about 350 km/s but the total
interplanetary magnetic field (Bt) peaked at 14 nT coupled with
steady southward Bz to -12 nT.

Activity levels remained elevated on 29 Aug at quiet to minor storm
levels due to effects from a co-rotating interaction region in
advance of an equatorial, negative polarity CH HSS. Wind speeds
approached 510 km/s with peak Bt values of 17 nT and peak southward
Bz briefly reached -15 nT. 30 Aug saw quiet geomagnetic field
conditions with solar wind parameters indicating a return to more
nominal levels.

FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 31 AUGUST-26 SEPTEMBER 2015

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels from 31
Aug - 10 Sep and again from 25-26 Sep. From 11-24 Sep, activity
levels are expected to increase to low to moderate (R1-minor) due to
the return of old Region 2403 (S15, L=193).

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit barring any
significant flare activity from returning region 2403 during 11-24
Sep.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to be at normal to moderate levels on 31 Aug - 02 Sep,
07-12 Sep, 19 Sep and 22-25 Sep. High flux levels are expected on
03-06 Sep, 13-18 Sep, 20-21 Sep and 26 Sep.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at minor storm
(G1-minor) levels on 01-02 Sep and 19 Sep due to positive polarity
CH HSS effects. Unsettled to active levels are expected on 03-04
Sep, 12-16 Sep, 18 Sep, 20 Sep and 24-25 Sep due to positive
polarity CH HSS effects. Mostly quiet levels are expected for the
remainder of the outlook period.

(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6950-AM, UT Monday Aug 31 at 0049, very poor carrier, could be 5 x 1390 local KCRC but not //. Suspect it`s relay of CKUT`s International Radio Report as heard last Sunday night; maybe a regular schedule pirate service? Yes, reports here confirm IRR,
which aired first around 2200 Aug 30, and again circa 0030 Aug 31.
So IRR is back on SW; for a while Area 51 on WBCQ was carrying it. Mark Taylor referred to this as ``Review of International Broadcasting``, a title already spoken for (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6950-USB, Aug 31 at 0135, rechecking the IRR relay, now something on USB instead of AM and playing a bit of music, but as soon as I tune in, switch to CW and then SSTV, more like 6950.5? It`s Amphetamine Radio, matching details here:
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Aug 31 at 0055, JBA carrier from R. Chaski (5990 CRI/Cuba is already off), until cutoff at 0106:55* which is 5.5 seconds later than last night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 11905, Aug 31 at *0114:10 carrier on with flutter, S1; music prélude starts at 0114:46.5; 2+1 timesignal ends at at 0115:19.5, SLBC opening Hindi(?) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7267.5-LSB, Aug 31 at 0130, looking for Hurricane Watch Network, but some other net just interested in making quick contacts, exchanging signal reports, including: KB4TBF, KM4MUR, N2XTT, N5UZQ, WD4T. Apparently Erika is no longer such a threat to FL? Nothing heard earlier on 14325-USB either (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1788 monitoring: confirmed Sunday August 30 at 2300 on WRMI 11580; sufficient. Also confirmed from 0322 UT Monday August 31 on WBCQ 5109.7-CUSB Area 51; and 0330 Monday on WRMI 9955. Both checked first on webcast, then confirmed after 0330 on SW. Next:
1100 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955
0630 UT Wednesday HLR 7265-CUSB
1315 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955
1430 UT Wednesday HLR 7265-CUSB
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5109.7-USB, Aug 31 at 0057, Area 51 via WBCQ, Johnny Lightning, something about clitoral stimulation and Niagra; RNI jingle, discussing Trump; S9+15-20, and back on the SSB transmitter unlike last night when AM on-frequency. On webcast keeps going way past 0300 with politico/religious comments about #uckabee, et al. Finally his prostate calls upon him to use the facilities and starts to play tune on his webcast, but WBCQ cuts away to start WOR 1788 at 0322 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5090.175, Aug 31 at 0101, WTWW-2 is on 5085.0 and putting out intermittent spur here with same modulation; then another one pinpointed to 5088.7 on the NRD-545 with very fine tuning (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1700, Aug 30 at 0554 UT, Tejano music loops SSE/NNW, no doubt KKLF Richardson (Dallas) TX, reactivated once again. More of it Aug 31 at 0043 UT check, atop frequency, altho no ID caught yet. Similar but not // to 1540 KEDA San Antonio. KKLF may be sporadic (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 12005, Aug 31 at 0111, VOV English to North America is back to VG level, S9 and plenty modulation; seems slightly low about 12004.98. Past few nights was virtually inaudible, presumably due to propagation disturbance. Only registered as Woofferton site, but it would make sense to switch to Ascension under such circumstances if they are going to stay on 12 MHz till Octend (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1560, Aug 30 at 0553 UT, no dominant YSR or any sports station looping NE/SW like 24 hours ago (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

ISIS radio station attacked inside Mosul

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Two anonymous gunmen launched a hit-and-run attack on an Islamic State radio station inside Mosul, the group’s stronghold, a Kurdish official said Saturday.

Saeed Mamuzini, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) spokesman for Mosul, told Rudaw that ISIS immediately after the attack set up a series of checkpoints inside the city to hunt the two assailants.

“The attack didn’t cause any casualties, and none of the assailants were injured,” Mamuzini said.

Al-Bayan radio network airs a news/talk format and broadcasts in Arabic, Kurdish, English, French and Russian. The ISIS radio station has been framed as “highly professional” and compared to NPR and the BBC for tone and quality.

Early in April ISIS launched English-language radio news bulletins on Al-Bayan. Al-Bayan's reporting on the group’s military operations and propaganda has been referenced by the Associated Press and the Washington Post.

The group also publishes a monthly online English-language magazine called Dabiq, with religious lessons, plus news about its activities. The magazine is concerned with establishing the religious legitimacy of the terror group and its self-proclaimed caliphate.

Glenn Hauser logs August 29-30, 2015

** MEXICO. 1300, Aug 29 at 0548 UT, I am rechecking 24 hours later the SS circumstantially identified as XEP, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Again a dominant signal from WSW (or ENE), apropos for 38,000 rather than legal 200 watts, but plenty of CCI. Is playing romantic song, ``Aquellos Ojos Verdes``; 0551 ``En Radio México Noticias, también música bonita``, then ``16 Tons`` in English! but not by TennErnFord, no bass this one. 0557, Radio México Noticias promo, federal promo for La Hora Nacional, promo some RMN morning shows; more music; 0602 ``Escuchas Radio México Noticias``, no further ID and into choral NA. 0604, NA is over already, and finally an ID for Radio México Noticias, including XEP call. This station is obviously determined to maintain its ``news`` identity even when playing music (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NETHERLANDS [non]. 9925, Aug 30 at 0127, JBA carrier from Mighty KBC via GERMANY, so another propagational bust: can`t wait till next week for the QSY to 7375. Little from Europe+ is making it on 9: Albania, Turkey, Cairo all JBACs, and Greece must be off again from both frequencies. WWV reported:

``Solar-terrestrial indices for 29 August follow.
Solar flux 100 and estimated planetary A-index 16.
The estimated planetary K-index at 0000 UTC on 30 August was 2.
No space weather storms were observed for the past 24 hours.
Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be minor.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level are likely.

The estimated planetary K-index at 0300 UTC on 30 August was 2.
Space weather for the past 24 hours has been minor.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level occurred.
Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be minor.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level are likely.``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6925.16-AM, Aug 30 at 0103, pirate music reading S6 but barely audible; presumed Liquid Radio on its signature crystal (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6965-USB, Aug 30 at 0139, music at good level, S9; 0140 ``nobody knows indie rock like DJ Dick Weed. This is Radio Free What-ever``. Allan Weiner said last night on WBCQ that pirates should use AM instead of SSB; but the SSB ones generally do better here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Aug 30 at 0059, JBA carrier from R. Chaski, until autocutoff at 0106:49.5* which 38 seconds later than last catch six nights ago on Aug 24 at 0106:11.5 --- i.e., averaging 6.33 later per (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. Saturday at 1430 when World of Radio is supposed to be on, No signal audible from Hamburger Lokalradio on 7265 via UTwente. Same as on Wednesdays. Can anyone hear it? Even Tom Taylor? 73, (Glenn Hauser, OK, Aug 29, BDXC-UK yg via DXLD)

World of Radio confirmed here on 7265 at 1440 UT tune-in but it`s a very weak signal, SIO 242 at best, improving slightly at 1445. I think that Twente, being that much closer to Germany, must be in the skip zone. 73s (Dave Kenny, Caversham Berks UK, AOR 7030+ 25m long wire, ibid.)

This morning via Twente signals from Germany only on 3985 kHz and 3995 kHz. Not even a carrier visible on 49 m and 41 m. 73 (Harald Kuhl, Germany, ibid.)

Hi Glenn, No problem here in northwest England, I just finished listening to it. It wasn't very strong, especially at the start, but was perfectly readable throughout much of the last 20 minutes (Alan Gale, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Next:

** U S A. 5085, UT Sunday Aug 30 at 0109, WTWW-2 is off, so no QSO show tonight.

12104.94, Aug 30 at 0134, instead Ted is transmitting nothing but 30 over 9 dead air here except for some hum (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1560, Aug 29 at 0607 UT, very good signal dominating, unlike normal nightmiddle situation here, with sports talk by YL hostess, soon IDed as Yahoo Sports Radio, discussing TCU which on a national net doesn`t mean this is Texas, yet smax of KGOW Bellaire (Houston) TX, EXCEPT this loops roughly NE/SW, all wrong for KGOW, and which on night pattern throws out into the Gulf 15 kW, while day pattern goes NE with 46 kW (and is a bigsig even here to the NNW around SR/SS. If this is it despite the DF, has to be on day pattern).

This site
does NOT have any listing of affiliates, just a bunch of sports news stories linked! Furthermore, searching yahoosports on KGOW gets no hits!

Strength, power, DF and network are all wrong for our puny OKC sports outlet, KEBC Del City, 1/0.25 kW like an old graveyarder. WMBH Joplin MO closer to east is another sportster, but is ESPN, even punier at 35 watts night. So WHAT IS THIS?? Some otherstation with a format flip? KLNG Council Bluffs IA is a 10 kW daytimer, sometimes nighttimer, but Christian the last we knew and in the new NRC AM Log. Another possibility: WPAD Paducah KY, 10/5 kW, which is now branded for its puny FM translator ``The Fan 99.5``, with a ``lineup`` showing some NBC Sports Radio, mostly Fox Sports Radio, including 1-5 am CDT (even weekends?), no YSR (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 2600.0, Aug 30 at 0056 UT, JBA signal on AM as I am tuning for the Canadian marine weather on 2598 (not heard), but this is something new; trace of music? Most likely a 2 x 1300 harmonic, so could it be WNQM Nashville? Just because they mix with WWCR onto 6220 doesn`t mean they also put out direct harmonix. Also crossed by slow ionosonde. Gone at recheck 0110 UT. So the unID`s official sunset could have been 0100 UT, off or to lower power. WNQM should do that at 0045 UT correctly in August, but we suspect they were not strictly compliant. The 0100 UT strip would be somewhat west of Nashville, such as IL, MS – plenty of possibilities. To be chased further. BTW, no carrier on 2660 at this time from presumed KGLD 1300 Tyler TX (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6940-CW, Aug 30 at 0101 as I am scanning for voice pirates, someone is roughly hand-keying a long string of Vs, and then a message I don`t copy, but never heard a DE. Pirate? There is also a RTTY signal much of the time in the 6940s intruding among pirates (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7200-LSB, Aug 30 at 0120, someham is playing music, fragment of ``My Way`` by Sinatra; other hams in net including K5FAB continue talking with seeming little note of it; about WDBJ.

7000-LSB, Aug 30 at 0138, as I start another scan downward of the pirate band, brief bit of music here too amid the CW; same guy? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

VOA Radiogram, 29-30 August 2015: MFSK image at 1500 Hz, then 2000 Hz
This weekend’s VOA Radiogram will include an experiment suggested by Mark in the UK.  Mark notices that interference to MFSK images comes from RF noise that is concentrated in the lower audio frequencies. He wants to know if images might be clearer if they are transmitted at a higher audio frequency.

Because of a few extra minutes in this weekend’s program, the third image will be transmitted a second time, at a center frequency of 2000 Hz.

Here is the lineup for VOA Radiogram, program 126, 29-30 August 2015, all in MFSK32 except where noted:

  1:30  Program preview
2:45  Strife reduces pollution in parts of Middle East*
  9:03  Diminished marine biodiversity*
16:10  Plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean*
24:18  MFSK32 at 2000 Hz: Same image*
26:37  MFSK32 at 1500 Hz: Closing announcements*

Glenn Hauser logs August 28-29, 2015

** BOLIVIA. 4409.76, Aug 29 at 0123, JBA carrier, presumably R. Eco, Reyes, listed 500 watts on 4409. Nothing around 4451, but algo around 4699, the other WOOB Bolivians (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BOLIVIA. 5952.47, Aug 29 at 0109, Radio Pio Doce, Siglo Veinte (XII/XX), measured here at 0109 Aug 29, very poor S 7-8 peaks in talk (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 11815, Aug 29 at 0117, R. Brasil Central with music, just S3 but no spurs blocking it --- until a trace of some from the lower side circa 11812 out of 11780 RNA, of course (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** COLOMBIA. 5910 & 6010, Aug 29 at 0110, no signals from HJDH and HJDH (but a JBA carrier on 6010.0; HFCC shows only possibility is a 5 kW reserve transmitter in Belarus, 23 hours a day; more likely a 5 kW Brasilian, unbeknownst to HFCC, but not off-frequency?). It seems the last time the Colombians were heard was May 23 as in DXLD 15-21.

I asked HJDH QSL manager Rafael Rodríguez R. in Bogotá why they are off, and received this rather surprising reply, original Spanish in the dxldyg and next DXLD; here in my translation: (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Best Regards, Mr. Hauser, Earlier this year, Martin Stendal was linked by the Colombian Attorney General in an investigation for alleged support he would give the Colombian guerrillas of the FARC. He was accused by two former guerrillas seeking economic and legal benefits, incriminating Martin. The investigation determined that the work he carried out in no way could be interpreted as support for the FARC, because what he does is just evangelize and seek peace in Colombia.

Among the accusations, it was mentioned that he used the shortwave broadcasters to send encrypted messages, something that was not proven, but during the period of the investigation he preferred to keep them off the air. At the end of May he was exonerated of any accusations.

He also suffered the loss of his father, who started the evangelical work here in Colombia. After that I could not really have direct contact with him. I am informed he has decided to wait until all the investigation calms down and he is not currently in Colombia.

The organization decided to perform preventive maintenance on the equipment which already had some flaws, but an ongoing problem in the area where the transmitters are located is the electricity supply (ups and downs, absence, etc.). After the maintenance it was decided to hold off until the situation is regularized, through a power plant fueled by diesel.

Actually I have no official information about ceasing broadcasts on shortwave, but all the work that Martin and his organization developed is going through changes. I am confident that sometime soon they will reactivate transmissions.

PS. I send you some links about the situation experienced by Martin with Colombian Attorney General, which has been solved for the better:

American missionary with alleged links to the FARC has been released:

The failed assignment of the prosecution in the case of the missionary:

Capture of the American missionary is a false positive --- FARC
(Rafael Rodríguez R., Colombia, Aug 27, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 1620, Aug 29 at 0138, R. Rebelde with excited commentary, but NOT // 5025, which is to be expected as 1620 then mentions ``sorteo de béisbol --- de la FM Radio Rebelde`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 12070 & 11935 at 0113 Aug 29; 9965.2 at 0129 Aug 29; and 9315 at 0133 Aug 29, all R. Cairo frequencies are JBA carriers, so I can`t really evaluate the modulation: cagey! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 9755-9760-9765, Aug 28 at 1305, DRM noise, not scheduled, but likely RNZI during what is normally a DRM hiatus, even for the special HFCC broadcasts. 9760 had been on their DRM schedule later before moving to 7330. Now from Aug 29, DRM should resume sporadic RNZI schedule as-needed for relays, mostly on weekdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6930-USB, Aug 29 at 0100, pirate music, 0101 announcements in kid voices? and stops. Just missed it. Was about S5 vs storm crash level peaking S9. To HFU for the answer: KBOX.
It seems there is currently no licensed KBOX on AM, per the NRC AM Log 2015-2016 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6925.16-AM, Aug 29 at 0103, JBA music, still at 0143, presumably the usual Liquid Radio, never strong enough here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Re 88.1, KWOU Woodward audio problems: received a prompt reply even tho it was after-hours on a Friday, 2236 UT Aug 28 from Patrick Roberts, Chief Engineer at mother station KGOU Norman:

``Hi Glen[n]. Thanks for the info. It seems that there is some internet link disturbance that's crept up recently in the OU network. We feed it over Tieline IP codecs. To help mask the problem, I've changed the profile on the Tieline encoder headed that way, adding 100% Forward Error Correction (basically sending the audio packets twice slightly delayed). That seems to have stopped the drop-out problem, at least at 5:30 (lots of people might have gone home at OU, lessening the problem naturally; we shall see). We normally have a very good path up to there, effectively on fiber most of the way through the same service provider. If it acts up again, I can switch out to our cellular modem for a while. I'll try to keep an eye on it for the next few days. Thanks! PR`` (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 11905, Aug 29 at *0114:11.5, carrier on from SLBC; don`t hear any music starting, but must be just too weak, as I can barely make out the 2+1 mistimesignal ending at 0115:19.5 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 6220.0-AM, WMDB Nashville TN, relayed by WNQM 1300, relayed by mixing spur with WWCR-4, 7520 minus 1300. Originally there was a power cut at 0045 UT, official August sunset in Nashville, corresponding to WNQM switch from 50 kW ND day to 5 kW direxional night. The signal after then would be detectable but much weaker.

I wasn`t listening before 0045 tonight, but surprised to be hearing it at ``high`` power level, 0105 UT Sat August 29, with ranchera music rating S6 vs storm crash peaks at S9. 0106 UT ``La Ranchera`` slogan of WMDB 880. 7520 WWCR is still on to produce the mixture, but I am not hearing much if any audio from it on 6220. 0132 still audible now at ~S7, and at 0144. So did WNQM stay on 50 kW after sunset??

This cannot last past 0158 when 7520 switches to 5890 UT Tue-Sat --- and one might reasonably expect to find the next SW-minus-MW mix on 5890 minus 1300 = 4590, but not sought lately. That will be on air all night; but 5890 doesn`t start until 0400 UT Sundays, 0300 UT Mondays. 7520 is not on air at all weekends, so no 6220 possible till UT Tuesday, but under these circumstances we should still hear it in September when WNQM supposedly cuts to night power and pattern at 0000 UT just as 7520 is starting (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1788 monitoring: confirmed Friday August 28 at 2330 on WRMI-12, 5850, good signal on their lowest frequency, not much subject to propagation disturbances, and on 315 degree antenna right across the middle of North America; can only improve into fall and winter, so I hope we can keep this time & frequency. Next:
0630 UT Saturday HLR 7265-CUSB
1430 UT Saturday HLR 7265-CUSB [please confirm: not audible Wednesday]
1930vUT Saturday WA0RCR 1860-AM

2300 UT Sunday WRMI 11580
0300vUT Monday WBCQ 5110v Area 51
0330 UT Monday WRMI 9955
1100 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955
0630 UT Wednesday HLR 7265-CUSB
1315 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955
1430 UT Wednesday HLR 7265-CUSB
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7489.95-AM, UT Sat Aug 29 at 0145 tune-in to `Allan Weiner Worldwide` live on WBCQ, running way over, but why not? Good signal and // 5110.0-AM (DSB plus carrier) which is much weaker in noise; and 9330 is not on. He`s had a long phone call with Anthony(?) a young person laudably interested in radio; now starts going thru some pirate logs from the latest Free Radio Weekly, mentions that a lot of them are by Glenn Hauser.

This prompts Scott Becker to call in, suggesting they ``drag`` me to the next WinterFest, where I have ``never been``, ungluing me from my chair (tho I do go to the PO Box, they admit). Suggests putting a poll on the WBCQ website whether people would like to meet me, ``a friggin` institution`` at the next Fest. Scott also threatens to visit me from his place 50 miles away in Kansas. 0151 back to some more FRW pirate logs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, Aug 29 at 0155, open carrier/dead air at 50 to 60 over S9 level from WTWW-2, with some hum as always. I assume Ted is about to play DJ prior to the 0400 `Midnight [sic] in the Desert` Art Bell broadcast, as I think he does most weeknights (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 12005, Aug 29 at 0113, VOV English relay to N America via UK remains nothing but a JBA carrier; summer is over, hastened by geomag storm not recovered from yet, and more to come in early September (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BIAFRA [non]. 15560, Aug 28 circa 1805, no signal here from R. Biafra (nor on 15660 as misreported elsewhere), but others further east are hearing it poorly on 18-20 UT schedule. Based on reception quality, Bill Bingham in RSA suspects the site is not Issoudun, FRANCE as previously supposed. Also, it`s off-frequency, not likely for TDF/MBR, as noted by Rodney Johnson, NV via the UTwente remote SDR: ``Hearing English (heavy African accent) right now (~1945) on 15560.45``. Bill Bingham says the alleged 06-08 broadcast has not been confirmed on 15560, but instead a DW relay via South Africa is still there from 0627 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 17730, Aug 28 at 2025, RHC Portuguese (very much Brazilian accent) in philatelic show, with normal modulation, not suptorted like 24 hours ago (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 880, Aug 28 at 0556, XE NA with KRVN nulled, and tnx to dead air from KHAC-USB. 0557 ID for XEPNK and a similar FM call, plug Radio México network. This is Los Mochis, Sinaloa, 10/2 kW, surpassing 24h NSP XEV Chihuahua if it`s really on, 5/0.25 kW per IRCA Mexican Log (Glenn Hauser, oK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1300, Aug 28 at 0546.4 UT, timecheck in Spanish for 11:45; loops WSW, music. Only two XEs are in the summer UT -6 zone, XEJL in Sinaloa, 1000/250 watts; and XEP Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, 38000/200 watts, but the latter often heard here with suspected day power at night. However, it soon lost out to the CCI. No US SS stations in the UT -6 zone according to the 2015 NRC AM Log, but some Texans in UT -5. Assuming the TC is only a sesquiminute off instead of an hour off. No, the Mexican NA can be heard at 0602 UT, so local midnite in MDT zone. Spanish music still audible at 0613 by monitoring LSB only, conveniently suppressed by KHAC which had resumed modulating on USB (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1650, Aug 28 at 0559 UT, ``AM 16-50, Arklahoma`s talk radio, KYHN, Fort Smith``, nice singing ID, bong and CBS news. So still no sign of the alleged call change to WFSM which FCC shows, and quoted by some other DX sources without really monitoring it. Here`s the callsign history page showing previous KYHN and others, but not the date WFSM supposedly started:
Aside from the news, KYHN continues to air `Red Eye Radio` far-right trucker nonsense out of WBAP overnight, and repeated a couple seconds later on adjacent local 1640 KZLS. Note: my previous report of monitoring KYHN webcast at 1700 & 1800 UT was on Aug 27, not 28 (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Hi Karen, In case you haven`t heard, when KWOU [88.1 Woodward] has been audible yesterday and today, it`s marred by audio interruptions once or twice a minute, but highly variable. There`s a ringing sound and a few seconds silence before resuming, rather like internet buffering. Is that how you are feeding it? Regards, (Glenn Hauser, Enid, Aug 28, to KGOU GM Karen Holp, via DXLD) For example logged at 1332 & 1334 UT Aug 28, buffering bangs (gh)

** OKLAHOMA. 90.1, Aug 28 at 2105 UT, KUCO classical music, Debussy`s ``Images`` is extremely rudely interrupted by an Amber Alert --- but it`s so noisy it can`t be understood. (Later, on the news, it was a 2-year old boy abducted by his father yesterday at an OKC Walmart, recovered).

A few minutes later, KUCO announcer acted as if nothing had happened ruining the music (and my seminap) --- maybe he couldn`t tell? There has got to be a better way to do this. Of course I am not opposing the idea of Amber Alerts for missing persons, but like EAS tests which aren`t immediately urgent, these should be *managed* NOT to block out programming in progress, and furthermore, done with decent modulation. Why is that so difficult? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1788 monitoring: confirmed Friday August 28 at 2130 on WRMI 15770, and now much better at 2130.5 on WRMI 7570. Next:
2330 UT Friday WRMI 5850
0630 UT Saturday HLR 7265-CUSB
1430 UT Saturday HLR 7265-CUSB [please confirm: not audible Wednesday]
1930vUT Saturday WA0RCR 1860-AM
0315vUT Sunday WA0RCR 1860-AM
2300 UT Sunday WRMI 11580
0300vUT Monday WBCQ 5110v Area 51
0330 UT Monday WRMI 9955
1100 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955
0630 UT Wednesday HLR 7265-CUSB
1315 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955
1430 UT Wednesday HLR 7265-CUSB
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 670, Aug 28 at 0608 UT, CBS Sports Radio, loops ESE conveniently with WSCR Chicago nulled, which is also CBS but not same programming. Obviously it`s 5 kW ``daytimer``, KHGZ Glenwood AR, cheating yet again, and blocking reception of Cuba further away (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 880, Aug 28 at 0557 UT, open carrier with KRVN nulled, facilitating log of XEPNK (see MEXICO), i.e. KHAC Tse Bonito NM, with modulation resumed by 0613 UT in Jesus song on USB only (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Video explaining Radiogram concept

This is in addition to the YouTube videos of VOA Radiogram produced each week by Tim, K0RUS ...
Shortwave propagation was difficult during the weekend of 15-16 August, but it was a good workout for the text modes.
The Mighty KBC will transmit a minute of MFSK64 -- with a very vertical image -- Sunday at 0230 UTC (Saturday 10:30 pm EDT) on 9925 kHz, via Germany. It's part of the KBC broadcast to North America Sundays 0000-0300 UTC. Reports for this KBC transmission to Eric: themightykbc@gmail.com.
Because of a major paper deadline last weekend, followed by a busy week of audience research, I fell even further behind answering your emails.  I will get back to the emails today. If you would like to see the gallery of MFSK32 images from program 119, 11-12 July 2015, it can be downloaded from here ...
I hope you can tune in and write in this weekend.

AMPEGON RENEWS SHORTWAVE TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS IN ALGERIA

Turnkey project with transmitters and antennas to be installed for TDA at Bechar and Ouargla
Turgi, Switzerland, August 21, 2015. Ampegon has received a major contract by Télédiffusion d’Algérie (TDA) for development and installation of new shortwave transmission systems, enabling TDA to broadcast SW without purchasing airtime from third party vendors. Ampegon has been selected within a restricted international call to tender as supplier. The company had already successfully installed multiple projects in Algeria. In 2014, Ampegon in cooperation with Transradio replaced the 1.5 MW longwave transmission systems near Tipaza and is presently modernizing two mediumwave transmitter stations in Bechar and Oulet Fayed.
Ampegon will accompany TDA through the entire project - developing turnkey solutions at the two sites including two 300 kW shortwave transmitters, two shortwave antenna systems and civil works. All the antenna works will be carried out by Ampegon in Schifferstadt, Germany, while the transmitters will be designed and constructed at the Ampegon factory in Turgi, Switzerland. The multi-million Euro project will be finished within two years at the end of 2016.

Colombian SW stations off after false accusations of aiding FARC

Noticing that the HJDH stations on 5910v and 6010v have not been heard for some weeks, I inquired of their QSL manager about the situation:

Cordial Saludo, Mr. Hauser:

[Glenn`s translation follows:::]

Best Regards Mr. Hauser,

Earlier this year Martin Stendal was linked by the Colombian Attorney General in an investigation for alleged support he would give the Colombian guerrillas of the FARC. He was accused by two former guerrillas seeking economic and legal benefits, incriminating Martin. The investigation determined that the work he carried out in no way could be interpreted as support for the FARC, because what he does is just evangelize and seek peace in Colombia.

Among the accusations, it was mentioned that he used the shortwave broadcasters to send encrypted messages, something that was not proven but during the period of the investigation he preferred to keep them off the air.

PS. I send you some links about the situation experienced by Martin with Colombian Attorney General, which has been solved for the better (Rafael Rodríguez R., Bogotá, Colombia, Aug 27, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Clandestine Radio Biafra Now Broadcasting Across Most Africa

Masterweb Reports ] - Radio Biafra has launched a satellite television dubbed Biafra Television and a shortwave (SW) radio that will cover most Africa and beyond. According to the clandestine station, the frequency of the broadcast is 15560 kHz in the 19 meter band and hours of broadcast for the time being, 7.00 – 9.00 am and 7.00 – 9.00 pm Nigerian time. The station still broadcasts on FM, satellite and Internet, even though Nigeria National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) claim they have blocked them on FM and satellite,  and would also do the same on Internet. Briefing Journalists last month after a meeting between officials of Ministry of Information and President Buhari, Dr. Shade Yemi-Esan,  Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information said: “Right now the signals from radio Biafra have been jammed successfully by NBC. The commission is also working with security agencies to get those that are behind that radio because it is an illegal radio. It is not licensed by anybody to be on the airwaves in Nigeria.”

Nnamdi Kanu, Radio Biafra Director in a statement posted on their website, described their shortwave radio as “Nuclear War Head”.   It is unbelievable that Radio Biafra that is supposed to have had its wings clipped by NBC is now not only broadcasting in the South East and Niger Delta but now sending its air waves across Nigeria and Africa. Has NBC lost the air wave war with Radio Biafra? The answer will be known with what happens in the next few days.

New Ampegon shortwave transmission systems for Algeria

Algerian broadcaster Télédiffusion d’Algérie has enlisted Switzerland-based company Ampegon  to install shortwave transmission systems at two sites in Bechar and Ouargla. Ampegon will develop turnkey solutions at both sites including two 300 kW shortwave transmitters, two shortwave antenna systems and civil works. ** BIAFRA [non]. 15560, Aug 27 at 1943, JBA carrier with Doppler flutter during very disturbed propagation conditions, but it must be the new SW service of R. Biafra, clandestine, the one which had been on FM only but really bothering the powers that be in Nigeria. I wonder how much of it, if any, is in English. Tnx to José Miguel Romero for the story:

``BreakingNews 27/8/15 - Clandestine Radio Biafra Now Broadcasting Across Most Africa | Masterweb Reports

The story is illustrated with a young opposite-gender couple embracing, but not clear who they are. The local times given in UT +1 correspond to UT: 06-08 and 18-20. It`s likely that the site is Issoudun, FRANCE, which is on 15560 to Africa immediately prior to both broadcasts (but Deutsche Welle relays had then been scheduled, presumably, as backup/alternatives, surely out of the way for this).

We may hope for better reception to come; WWV reported at 1800 Aug 27:

``Solar-terrestrial indices for 26 August follow.
Solar flux 126 and estimated planetary A-index 30.
The estimated planetary K-index at 1800 UTC on 27 August was 5.
Space weather for the past 24 hours has been moderate.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G2 level occurred.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level occurred.
Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be minor.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G1 level are expected.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level are likely.``

** CUBA. 17730, Aug 27 at 2003 on caradio, RHC Portuguese but with suptorted modulation. Can be their best afternoon frequency.

11840, Aug 28 at 0012, RHC is open carrier/dead air, while 11760 is modulating plentifully, running S9+30 and splashing up to 15 kHz out, kind of mixing with the RNB spur around 11745. 11670 is also on, not quite as strong (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 9885-9890-9895, Aug 27 at 1255, DRM noise, no doubt RNZI in temporary test display for the benefit of attendees at HFCC B-15 in Brisbane, Australia, on this frequency at 0759-1258 for one more day (and a break after 1300) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. (1650), Aug 28 at 1700 UT, KYHN webcast is in Herman Cain show, but no break at hourtop --- he`s in a 20-minute quick-response segment; another far right wacko is on an hour later, with no break either, so I conclude the webcast, if really from KYHN, whose ID I was wanting to reconfirm instead of ``WFSM``, is way off-time as surely these shows accede to hourtop news hole breaks in real time (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 8820, Aug 27 at 2355 I start monitoring on the NRD-545 for the 7520+1300 WWCR+WNQM mixing product to pop on at the same time as 7520 on the PL-880. This happens at *2358:28 but nothing detectable on 8820. Propagation is very degraded and the noise level is high. I was able to hear 8820 carrier before but want to match its cut-on to 7520.

6220, I retune to and find a better than before signal from the 7520 minus 1300 mixing product, registering S8+, music in Spanish past hourtop to 0001 Aug 28 brief unreadable announcement, more music. As previously discovered, this is WMDB 880, ``La Ranchera``, Nashville, buying night-time on WNQM 1300. At first there was audio mix as before from some poor 2-way USB sailor. I couldn`t hear much from WWCR on 6220, till just a bit of steel drumming up to 0000 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 11870, Aug 28 at 0014, WEWN is quite weak with Doppler flutter on the carrier due to propagation disturbance (see BIAFRA), as are some but not all other degraded US signals. No such problem affects the lower WRMI frequencies, altho bands above 12 MHz are nearly dead (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
